Our Local Authority client are looking to appoint an enthusiastic graduate to be part of their environmental health team.
MAIN PURPOSE
The council are responsible for a project covering the South and Centre of London aimed at controlling emissions from large construction sites. A major part of the project is to carry out site audits and plant inspection to ensure that the sites have the least polluting equipment on site.
These benefits can be delivered in partnership with the construction industry as there is a general willingness to comply with the projects aims to reduce pollution across London.
These audits currently operate under a soft environmental health enforcement model. The site visits are undertaken are in the spirit of identifying problems that may be inherent on a site and where necessary, advising how to rectify these such that compliance can be achieved.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
For this role it is not important to have an in-depth understanding of diesel engine design, nor of the specifications of various machines. An awareness of the nature of construction site is required, a general scientific background and willingness to learn is essential.
The candidate will need to be aware that this role includes on-site visits in active construction sites so an understanding of health and safety and risk-assessment would be an advantage. The audit process involves a number of stages including initial and cold engagements, advisory pre-meetings, physical audits on sites, the preparation of and recommendations to sites requiring improvements, and the monitoring and evidencing of actions made.
Record-keeping and data-handling standards are essential. A high standard of written English and an ability to communicate with site managers is essential, a friendly but persistent approach is preferred, although officers are free to develop their own style and approach in order to deliver best results.
This is an ideal opportunity for a graduate or similar that wants to gain on the ground experience in Air Quality and help with delivering better air quality in London.
